At St. Anthony’s Frank C. Love Cancer Institute, we know that the affects of cancer treatment can be hard on your body. That’s why we are proud to be the first medical facility in Oklahoma to offer image-guided radiotherapy technology (IGRT), a new form of radiotherapy that allows the intensity of the radiation to be changed during your treatment.
Since cancer tumors are constantly moving from normal activities like breathing, traditional forms of radiotherapy can often damage the healthy cells surrounding your tumor. But IGRT, which combines a new form of scanning technology and intensity-modulated radiation therapy, enables our physicians to adjust the radiation beam based on the position of the targeted tumor and critical organs, in turn sparing more of your normal, healthy tissue.
According to Clinton Medbery, MD, a radiation oncologist at St. Anthony, “This technology allows us to image a tumor in great detail just prior to treatment so we can treat it with precision and have minimal impact on the healthy tissue surrounding the cell.”
At St. Anthony, we are committed to bringing cutting-edge treatment and expertise to you. That’s why we sent our IGRT team to the Netherlands Cancer Institute, where IGRT was first used, to train extensively on the use of this new treatment.
